Dear Juno,
I believe that it is your right to choose whether you want to keep or abort your baby; there is no right or wrong answer, so long as the mother gets to choose. There are just as many arguments supporting the idea of abortion than there are debunking it, so in my opinion, arguing it is a giant waste of time, and the decision should be left to the mother (and whomever she chooses to seek aid from). I mean, if the government passes legislation deciding to outlaw such important and consequential procedures capable of saving lives (arguably at the cost of another life), than what else could they do? Place bans on brushing your teeth because toothpaste is slightly toxic, or ban showers because they cost water, and shampoo can hurt your eyes?
I realize that comparing stinging eyes or digesting a drop of toothpaste to ending a life is undoubtedly going to offend some of you people. But that’s exactly the core of this entire issue: people are offended (to put it lightly) that lives are being ended for the sake of the mothers; whether the mother is too irresponsible to care for a baby, or because she was too stupid to have sex at a young age in the first place. While I do agree that most teenage mothers probably haven’t made the smartest decisions, the fact of the matter is that legally and morally, the life inside of them is theirs. Just as each and every one of you belong to your parents, as all of you religious people belong to your God or gods, the baby inside of a mother belongs to her, and is ultimately under her jurisdiction. If she chooses to end said life before it begins, then who is anyone to take that right away from her?
But there’s the other problem: is the baby, fetus, clump of cells, whatever you call it, actually alive? Scientifically, yes; as soon as the sperm fertilizes the egg, there is technically a life developing. Hell, even sperm could be considered alive; each sperm has a life goal, carries genes, and dies if it fails to reach said goal, so could you technically consider sex murder?
Okay this is starting to sound stupid and there are literally no facts in here, so I’m gonna wrap this up before I start sounding totally retarded: a pregnant woman should have the right to choose whether she wants to abort her child or not. No hoity-toity politician or ultra-religious cook should have any say in the matter. Let women have the right to choose, and not be forced down a dark and slippery slope because she made a mistake, or got raped, or whatever her situation is.
